Grading The Week: Why does it feel like Broncos’ kicking competition is only going to make us miss Brandon McManus more?

It took Brandon McManus 114 attempts and four seasons to miss as many extra points — seven — as the combo of Brett Maher and Elliot Fry have whiffed on over their last 72 attempts. Combined. Now, we’ll grant you, the guys coming back from vacation on the Grading The Week stat crew admittedly aren’t that good at math. But when they sent us that particular number, our initial reaction was probably the same as a lot of Broncos Country: Zoinks! Or rather, doinks!Broncos kicking competition — D-plusHey, hey, we trust you, Sean Payton. I mean, what choice do we have? It’s Shanny Part II in Dove Valley, the Penners are all-in, and the Broncos needed a grown-up with gravitas to lead the room after aiming low at head coach for what feels like ages. And maybe — actually, no, this is more of a certainty — we’re so scarred from trying to poke our own eyes out after watching NFL (makes air quotes) offenses (more air quotes) drawn up by Nathaniel Hackett and “Pencil” Pat Shurmur these last few years...San Francisco homicides: Tenderloin shooting, two arrests

LE MARKSTEIN, France (AP) — Tadej Pogačar pipped defending champion Jonas Vingegaard to take the Tour de France penultimate stage on Saturday but it won’t be enough to stop his great rival winning the race.Vingegaard maintained his lead of 7 minutes, 35 seconds over two-time champion Pogačar and will surely be crowned the Tour winner again after Sunday’s largely ceremonial stage ends on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.Pogačar, who won in 2020 and 2021, claimed his second stage win in the 110th edition of cycling’s most famous race but was unable to make up for Vingegaard’s huge advantage built in the Alps.Saturday’s 133.5-kilometer (83-mile) stage from Belfort to the mountain resort of Le Markstein was the last tough test for the riders and the 3,600 meters of climbing took its toll on many of them.Young Spanish rider Carlos Rodriguez, who still harbored hopes of overtaking Adam Yates to third place, crashed going around a bend at 33 km. Rodriguez got back on his bike but with blood on ...Al menos 11 muertos y cuatro heridos tras incendio provocado en Sonora, México

Brisbane, Australia (AP) — Despite a narrow 1-0 loss in its opening match of the Women’s World Cup, Haiti treated fans to a spirited performance against European champion England. The kind of spirit showed was nothing new for a Haiti squad that has faced a difficult journey just to make it to the tournament being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, arriving for its World Cup debut with no sponsors and no home games to prepare. The Haitians are representing a struggling nation that had been waiting nearly half a century to play on the game’s biggest stage. Its last involvement was when Haiti’s men’s team played in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany.“We’re very proud of our performance,” coach Nicholas Delépine said. “We’ve worked very hard and for us it was a huge test. We were very close to England. The federal court for the District of Maryland is warning citizens not to fall for false jury service claims from scam callers.Officials said these callers are impersonating court administrators, U.S. Marshals and state and federal law enforcement officers who claim victims will be hauled off to jail if they don’t pay a fine for missing jury duty.“The callers insisted that their victims arrange to meet them with cash or prepaid credit cards,” the court said in a news release.Maryland’s district court added that “callers sometimes [disguise] their phone numbers so that they appear to be court or law enforcement numbers on the recipients’ caller ID. They also may transfer victims during the calls to create the illusion that they are speaking with government offices.”If you get a call claiming to be looking for a fine because of missing jury duty, officials said that call is fraudulent.“Neither this Court nor any other law enforcement age...‘You could not find a bigger champion for Warrenton’: Community mourns death of Great Harvest owner Pablo Teodoro

(CNN) — The US Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday recalled roughly 346,000 Cupkin Double-Walled Stainless Steel Children’s Cups because they “contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban.”The recalled 8- and 12-ounce cups, which were manufactured in China, were sold online at Amazon.com and Cupkin.com from January 2018 through March 2023 for about $20, according to CPSC.“Consumers should immediately take the cups away from children and stop using them,” the agency said.“With a few limited exceptions … all children’s products manufactured in or imported into the United States must not contain more than 100 parts per million (ppm) of total lead content in accessible parts,” the CPSC said. There is no known safe level of lead exposure in children.CPSC advised contacting Soojimus, the company that makes the cups, for a full refund, and said it and Amazon were “contacting all known purchasers directly.”No incidents or injuries have b...Howie Carr: Boston’s local color includes regular sightings of ‘hundreds of open, uncapped needles’

All you need to know about life in the City of Boston right now is summed up in a BPD report from July 15 describing the cops’ response to a stabbing in the Mass & Cass district:“It should be noted that Officers had to be cognizant of the hundreds of open, uncapped hypodermic needles when responding as well as numerous individuals that were also in the area. FA 81 (Lt. Staines) had to broadcast the health risks and dangers that Officers were facing when they were administering life saving first aid and scene security.”To repeat: “hundreds of open, uncapped hypodermic needles.”Who pays for all these needles? Got a mirror? This is now official government policy just about everywhere. Make it “safer” for the junkies to keep shooting up. Just keep giving them free needles. What could possibly go wrong? The whole affray described in this laconic BPD report is nothing out of the ordinary. And that’s the problem. But as you read it, ask yourself this. What if someone in any other part of...Latest news
