Everyone in the D.C. area has access to a designated driver this Fourth of July, thanks to the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s SoberRide program. The nonprofit is paying up to $15 on the Lyft app for residents celebrating with alcohol on July Fourth to get home safely. The program will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday and will run until 4 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5.Kurt Erickson, president of WRAP, said the $15 should cover the estimated cost of most rides around the region.“But let’s say your fare is $20, we’re still going to pay for the first $15 and the passenger will simply be on the hook for the remaining $5,” Erickson explained. The program is meant to keep roads safe from impaired drivers that account for 39% of U.S. traffic deaths during the Fourth of July holiday, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s estimates from 2021.The charity offered its SoberRide program last Independence Day as well as on St. Patrick’s...Verstappen qualifies in first place for the Austrian Grand Prix sprint race

You’ll have to forgive me for not shouting for joy when Domingo German completed his perfect game Wednesday night in Oakland.Nothing against him. He had no way knowing, of course, that he had just destroyed a special little niche I had enjoyed for the last two decades as one of the few people who could claim to have been present at Yankee Stadium for all three Yankee perfect games — Don Larsen’s on Oct. 8, 1956, David Wells’ May 17, 1998 and David Cone’s July 18, 1999.It was after Cone hurled his perfecto, on Yogi Berra Day with a 33-minute rain delay interruption no less, that Joe Torre and Don Zimmer got to talking in the Yankee manager’s office about how both of them had been at all three Yankee perfect games. Torre explained that he had been to Larsen’s as a fan, sitting in the left field seats, while Zimmer was in the visiting Dodger dugout as an inactive player having suffered a severe beaning back in June that limited him to 17 games ...Myanmar’s Supreme Court to hear appeals of ousted leader Suu Kyi in cases brought by the army

BANGKOK (AP) — Myanmar’s Supreme Court scheduled hearings for this month to consider appeals from ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi against her conviction in cases that saw her receive a total of 33 years in prison, legal officials said Saturday. The cases against her are mostly brought by the military that seized power from her elected government in February 2021.The 78-year-old Suu Kyi was arrested following the military takeover and tried on a variety of charges that supporters and rights groups say were concocted to legitimize the usurpation and discredit her so she could not resume an active role in politics. She has not been seen or allowed to speak in public since she was arrested and her lawyers have been barred from speaking to the press about her cases since late 2021.Two legal officials familiar with the cases filed against her said the Supreme Court planned to hear Suu Kyi’s appeals on July 5 in two cases in which she was convicted of election fraud and breaching the country’...Latest news
