Denver City Council corrects Fair Elections Fund “rounding error” to save city over $4 million

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:44 GMT

The Denver City Council on Monday unanimously approved a handful of tweaks to the voter-approved Fair Elections Fund, including a change that will save the city an estimated $4.4 million over four years. That doesn’t mean there will be less to go around when candidates next line up to run for City Council, mayor and other municipal offices in 2027 and possibly qualify for public financing to fuel their campaigns. Before Monday, the city’s annual financial obligation to the Fair Elections Fund was poised to ratchet up almost 75% next year to $5 per resident. Now the city’s annual contribution to the fund is expected to rise from $2.88 per Denverite per year to $3.45 in 2025, corresponding with the rate of inflation in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metro area. It will be adjusted again in 2029.That increase should funnel around $400,000 more into the pot each year than the current annual contribution of $2.1 million, according to the Denver Clerk and Recorder’s Off...

Where have all the white tablecloths gone? Fine dining in Denver has a new look

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:44 GMT

Caroline Glover doesn’t necessarily consider Annette a fine-dining restaurant because of its bare wooden tables and laid-back atmosphere, but “I do think our style of hospitality is very geared towards fine dining whether or not you realize it while you’re sitting there,” she said.James Beard Award-winning chef Caroline Glover alongside husband and co-owner Nelson Harvey at Annette in Stanley Marketplace in Aurora on Nov. 21, 2023. (Photo by AAron Ontiveroz/The Denver Post)Her customers and fellow restaurant industry folks — not to mention accolades, like the 2022 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Mountain Region — definitely realize it.“I absolutely consider Annette fine dining,” said Denise Mickelsen, a former food writer who now works for the Colorado Restaurant Association. “Colorado is known for being rather casual. Even our fine dining restaurants don’t need linens on the table to define themselves as fine dining.”Ten or 15 years ago, fine dining in Denver was...

Colorado’s best winter festivals for 2023-24

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:44 GMT

As Coloradans, we don’t simply endure or tolerate winter. We embrace it.Sure, we could all just hunker down and hibernate through the snow and ice. Instead, we gather with friends around bonfires. We ski. We marvel at ice sculptures. We play games. We watch live music. We climb icy waterfalls. In Colorado, we welcome winter like an old friend. And perhaps nowhere is that sentiment more true than at the many diverse festivals dotting the state from December to April. So, as you make your plans for winter fun, add one or two or more (!) of these beloved annual gatherings to your list.A crowd gathers around a large bonfire at the 56th annual Ullr Fest in Breckenridge. Look both ways on one-way streets, too … a panicked wrong-way driver could be heading toward you: Roadshow

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:44 GMT

Q: Thank you for your recent column on pedestrian safety, especially the advice to “Look left-right-left.” I just returned from a vacation in India, where they drive on the left side of the road, so am in the habit of looking in both directions before crossing the street.I live in downtown San Jose, which has many one-way streets. In the last week, I was almost run over three times by cars going the wrong way. The only thing that saved me was that I looked in both directions before crossing. Cars driving the wrong direction have no stoplight facing them, so even though I have a green crossing signal, they careen through the intersection. They’re often driving fast because they realize their error, are panicking and trying to find a place to turn around.Related ArticlesTransportation | Why has price of hydrogen fuel jumped so high? Here’s where Caltrans is concerned about Bay Area under-freeway storage after L.A.’s I-10 fire

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:44 GMT

Stacks of wooden pallets, vehicles, trailers, storage bins, appliances, RVs and equipment all crowd the Interstate 580 underpass in West Oakland, corralled by a tall black metal gate. A sign declares “State Property, No dumping, No Parking, No Trespassing.” Another advertises “Yard space for rent! Trucks, RVs, buses, large equipment and more.”The site near Emeryville is among more than a dozen Bay Area under-freeway spaces that the California Department of Transportation flagged for immediate reinspection after a similarly crammed storage area under Interstate 10 in Los Angeles erupted in flames Nov. 11.That massive blaze, believed to be arson, ignited on an adjacent storage yard. The flames, so intense they spread to the roadway above, closed the vital artery that carries more than 300,000 daily drivers for eight days and put a spotlight on Caltrans’ program of leasing storage space on right-of-way land under and alongside state highways. And it isnR...

Modern earthquakes in US could be aftershocks from quakes in the 1800s, scientists say

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:44 GMT

By Allison Chinchar | CNNAfter large earthquakes, there is an expectation that aftershocks could occur in the hours and days that follow, but aftershocks from some of the strongest earthquakes in recorded United States history may still be happening — nearly 200 years later, new research has found.Frequent aftershock activities stemming from a trio of quakes that occurred near the Missouri-Kentucky border between 1811 and 1812, and a separate earthquake in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1886, are likely continuing today, according to a study published recently in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth. One of the regions researchers focused on, called the New Madrid seismic zone, encompasses present-day Memphis and the surrounding Mid-Mississippi River Valley area, and the other includes Charleston and the surrounding coastal plain. Seismic activity in these relatively stable regions of North America is not well understood, and its nature is debated among scientists, the st...
