Israel announced an expanded ground operation on Saturday after knocking out communications and creating a near-blackout of information in the Gaza Strip with increased bombardment and artillery fire overnight.Explosions from continuous airstrikes lit up the sky over Gaza City for hours after nightfall Friday as the Israeli military said it was expanding ground operations in the territory, signaling a move closer to an all-out invasion of Gaza meant to crush the ruling Hamas militant group after its bloody rampage in southern Israel on Oct. 7.The Palestinian telecom provider, Paltel, said the bombardment caused “complete disruption” of internet, cellular and landline services as the besieged enclave’s 2.3 million people were largely cut off from contact with the outside world. Some satellite phones continued to function. The Palestinian death toll passed 7,300. The Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza, which tracks the toll, released a detailed list including names and ID numbers on ...

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel is expanding its ground operation in Gaza with infantry and armored vehicles backed by “massive” strikes from the air and sea, the Israeli military spokesman said Saturday.Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said that “the forces are still on the ground and are continuing the war.”Previously, troops had conducted brief nightly ground incursions before returning to Israel.Earlier Saturday, the military had released videos showing columns of armored vehicles moving slowly in open sandy areas of Gaza, the first visual confirmation of ground troops, and said warplanes bombed dozens of Hamas tunnels and underground bunkers. The move is a further escalation in Israel’s campaign to crush the territory’s ruling militant group after its bloody incursion in southern Israel three weeks ago and a new sign that Israel is moving closer to an all-out invasion of Gaza. Late Friday, Hagari had said ground forces were “expanding their activity” in Gaza and “acting with great f...

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Sampson Zheng shot a 6-under 65 at Royal Melbourne on Saturday despite gusting winds to take a four-stroke lead into the final round of the Asia-Pacific Amateur.Chinese player Zheng’s three-round total of 3-under 210 was the only score under par in the tournament which awards the winner an invitation to the 2024 Masters and a spot in next year’s British Open at Royal Troon, along with being exempt from qualifying for the British Amateur. Zheng, who started the day six strokes behind and tied for 13th, set an amateur Composite Course record at Royal Melbourne.Zheng broke the amateur record of 66 held by Michael Bonallack, whom the trophy is named after, for 55 years and matched earlier this week by New Zealand’s Kazuma Kobori.“I just kept myself really patient,” Zheng said. “I used the contours of the greens well. LUCKNOW, India (AP) — When the Cricket World Cup schedule was announced in July, India vs. England on Sunday was expected to be a marquee match. It will be anything but.England’s poor showing at the World Cup so far has befuddled even its most ardent fans. One win from five games is the worst showing for a defending champion since 1999, when 1996 winners Sri Lanka won two out of five league games and failed to qualify for the next stage of that tournament.England’s only win so far came at Dharamsala — beating Bangladesh by 137 runs. It is ninth in the points’ table with a minus 1.634 run-rate.“I am not a mathematician but it is over now — with our net run-rate and too many teams who are going to take games off each other, we have to come to terms with that from now. We are (only) playing for a lot of pride,” England coach Matthew Mott said after an eight-wicket loss to Sri Lank a.Despite what Mott said, England is still mathematically alive. If it wins four games in a row and reaches...
