Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:28:42 GMT

MADRID (AP) — Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has found a way to turn the doubters into supporters.Nearly a year after he was appointed amid a wave of skepticism, De la Fuente now has widespread backing at the helm of La Roja, having turned Spain into a contender again and comfortably securing the team a spot in the 2024 European Championship.Spain qualified for next year’s tournament in Germany on Sunday with a 1-0 win at Norway — the team’s sixth straight triumph since a loss at Scotland in March had left De la Fuente under pressure just two games into his stint.“We are always learning,” De la Fuente said. “At that moment the analysis was different than it is now. We’ve just reached an important objective and we have to keep working and learning. We recognize what was done well, but we know there are still things to improve.”The 62-year-old De la Fuente replaced Luis Enrique after the team’s loss to Morocco in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar. He was then relatively unknown...

New threats closing in on college sports, including antitrust lawsuit to force TV revenue sharing

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:28:42 GMT

At a reception attended by several university presidents in Manhattan, Arizona State President Michael Crowe was asked to ponder a not-too-distant future where Sun Devils football and basketball players get a cut from the billions of dollars their sports generate in media rights deals.“I don’t support that. And so are we preparing for it? The answer is no, we’re not,” Crowe recalled. “That is not an outcome which is conducive, in my view, to the success of the pluralistic, gender-balanced, college-sports framework that we presently have in the United States.”All the same, the NCAA and major college sports conferences are facing yet another antitrust lawsuit — among other legal and political challenges — that could force decision-makers to reckon with a reality where some athletes are paid employees or at least get money in a revenue-sharing model that looks a lot like professional sports.House vs. the NCAA is a class-action lawsuit being heard in the Northern District of California ...

As the war between Israel and Hamas escalates, the U.N.’s special agency for Palestinian refugees warned Monday that under-siege Gaza is short of body bags. “The number of killed is increasing. There are not enough body-bags for the dead in Gaza,” the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said in a press release. Since Hamas launched its violent surprise attack in Israel nine days ago — killing more than 1,400 Israelis and triggering retaliatory air strikes from Israel and a siege of the Gaza Strip — 2,329 Palestinians have been killed, according to the report. “Gaza has had no electricity, pushing vital services, including health, water and sanitation to the brink of collapse, and worsening food insecurity,” the agency added in the report.Last week, Israel ordered civilians in Gaza City to evacuate to the south, as part of preparation for a ground assault on Gaza. LONDON — A Conservative MP is facing a ban from the House of Commons over allegations of bullying and sexual misconduct against a staff member.Parliament’s Independent Expert Panel (IEP) on Monday recommended that Peter Bone, MP for Wellingborough since 2005, be handed a six-week suspension from the Commons after dismissing his appeal against multiple claims in an earlier investigation that he “verbally belittled, ridiculed, abused and humiliated” a member of his staff between 2012 and 2013.It also upheld a finding from parliament’s Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS), which investigated the original allegations, that Bone committed sexual misconduct by exposing himself “to the complainant on an overseas trip.”The Conservative Brexiteer has denied the allegations, and called the investigation “flawed” and “procedurally unfair.”The IEP’s findings will now go to the committee on standards, made up of fellow MPs, who will d...

The Vikings brought the blitz.By the end of the first quarter, Jordan Hicks says the Vikings generally have a pretty good idea of how opposing offenses are going to handle the vast array of blitzes defensive coordinator Brian Flores employs. There isn’t a team in the league that blitzes with near the frequency of Minnesota, which entered Week 6 bringing five or more rushers in 54% of opponent’s dropbacks. That’s more than double a lot of defenses. On the first snap of the game, the Vikings showed six men right at the line of scrimmage. SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Wine made in ancient ways is gaining new fans.Natural wine — which emphasizes sustainability and minimal processing — is seeing growing interest in the U.S even though overall wine consumption has been declining since 2015, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, a research firm. While natural and other sustainable wines made up less than 1% of sales in 2021, demand was rising faster than the wine category as a whole, according to alcohol delivery site Drizly.Generally, natural wine is made with hand-picked organic grapes that haven’t been sprayed with herbicides or pesticides. Once they’re crushed — sometimes by foot, the way they were crushed by ancient Romans — they are naturally fermented with no added water, yeast or other ingredients. Some natural winemakers add sulfites, a chemical found naturally in grapes, as a preservative; others don’t. Some filter their wines; others leave them cloudy and full of sediment. The result is wines that are earthy, savor...
